End of GaTi Firmware for DG834GT

My DG834GT gone bad after a power surge. This marks the end of GaTi firmware. I will be moving to a separate DSL modem & wireless router setup, as most of the integrated ones suffer from problems and not on par with features of wireless routers. Current candidates are following, if you have suggestions please do drop a comment.

HOWTO: Coustom DNS Settings with GaTi V0.6 Beta1

Netgear firmware 1.02.19 has a problem that you can not set coustom DNS settings. If you miss this feature with GaTi firmware use following procedure to set the settings (OpenDNS servers are used in the example)

1) Enable Telnet in the left side menu (UberGT->Telnet settings) then reboot the router
2) Telnet to the router i.e telnet 192.168.0.1
3) Login using your web admin password and user as root
4) You will have shell prompt
5) Now set DNS first server IP address issuing following command
nvram set wan_dns1=208.67.222.222
6) Now set DNS second server IP address by issuing following command
nvram set wan_dns2=208.67.220.220
7) Now enable custom DNS settings by issuing the following command
nvram set wan_fix_dns=1
8) Now reboot your router and verify that your DNS settings working or not

I am looking for VPN testers, if you are able to use VPN with 1.02.19 firmware and willing to test next beta of GaTi which will have updates for IPSec solution (openswan) of VPN for improved stability and security please leave a note in the forum.

Freerunner GPS on Android

Finally able to get GPS working on my Freerunner running Android. Here are the pictures showing my location in AndNav2 application.




Patches are submitted to Koolu. If want to try before here is the patch, this patch is for koolu-1.0 branch.

Neo Freerunner & Android

I have got my self a Neo Freerunner an opensource mobile platform for a couple of months now. Tried various software options available for freerunner. None of them are stable for a daily phone use. Once initial Android port was made available on FR i have been trying it. I was already into hacking Android for various reasons, so it gave me good reason to try things on FR. One thing I can say is that Android felt better on FR than any other Linux based solution. Major reason I could see the X server, which is a big bottleneck. Qt extended is slightly better still not make good usable phone on FR to me.

Recently I was able bring up the cupcake branch of Android on FR. Lot things needed to patch and audio interface changes were made for which there was no proper porting done (I have a stubbed audio). One the new feature in cupcake is the on screen keyboard which was not that in previous release. This is very much required feature for FR as it lacks any keys other than POWER & AUX.

There seems to be other changes in UI layouts as it seems to try fit layouts for VGA screen of FR. Note that android only supports upto HVGA screen. In previous release it was still HVGA displayed on VGA. I have pictures to share the cupcake on FR below including new on-screen keyboard.

GaTi V0.5 Beta1 brings following changes
